Telegram received threats first from Democrats and then from Republicans after the January 6, 2021 storming of the Capitol.

Pavel Durov told Tucker Carlson that they first received a letter, presumably from a Democratic congressman, who demanded the release of all available data on the riots.

He threatened that disobeying the request would be a violation of the U.S. Constitution. Telegram's lawyers advised Durov to ignore the request. Later came a letter already from Republicans, who threatened the same, but demanded not to give the data to Democrats.

"Thus, we received two letters from which it was clear that whatever we did, it would be a violation of the US Constitution".

Telegram founder Pavel Durov emphasized the messenger's independence and freedom of expression within it in an interview with Tucker Carlson.
Durov is proud that his app has become a symbol of free speech. According to him, he has no intention of censoring the messenger. Durov also added that Telegram hasn't spent a single dollar on advertising in the entire time. Independence, quality and freedom of the platform have become the main factors in attracting new users.
